The foundation of any great apple crumble is the quality and preparation of the apples. To ensure they cook evenly and achieve the perfect texture, it's essential to slice them properly. Begin with firm, tart apple varieties such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp; these apples hold their shape well during baking and provide a wonderful contrast to the sweet crumble topping.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For the Crumble Topping:

1 cup rolled oats

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

For Serving:

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional)

Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large skillet set over medium heat, melt the 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Once melted, add the sliced Granny Smith apples. Sprinkle the apples with the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir the mixture well to ensure the apples are evenly coated with the spices. Cook for about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften and start to caramelize. Once done, remove the skillet from heat.

Make the Crumble Topping: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Whisk the dry ingredients together until well mixed. Pour the melted butter into the bowl and stir until the mixture forms a crumbly texture resembling coarse crumbs.

Assemble the Dish: Carefully spoon the caramelized apple filling into the skillet, spreading it out evenly. Now, generously sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling, covering it completely.

Bake: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes. Keep an eye on it, and bake until the crumble topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling along the edges.

Serve: After baking, take the skillet out of the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve the warm apple crumble topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. For an extra touch, garnish with fresh mint leaves if desired.
