Ingredients

1 cup pumpkin puree (either homemade or canned)

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup whole milk

1/2 cup pure maple syrup

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon salt

Whipped cream (for serving, optional)

Crushed pecans or walnuts (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 325°F (160°C). Prepare a 9x9-inch baking dish by placing it in a larger baking pan, which will be used later for a water bath.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, heavy cream, whole milk, and maple syrup. Use a whisk to mix the ingredients until you achieve a smooth and well-blended consistency.

Add Flavorings: Next, crack the eggs into the mixture one at a time, ensuring to whisk thoroughly after each addition. Incorporate the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt, mixing until all components are fully combined and the mixture is creamy.

Strain for Smoothness (Optional): For a velvety texture, you can strain the custard mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into another bowl to eliminate any lumps and ensure a silky finish.

Pour and Prepare for Baking: Pour the custard mixture into the prepared 9x9-inch dish. Carefully pour hot water into the outer baking pan, filling it until the water reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish. This water bath will help the custard bake evenly and prevent cracking.

Bake: Place the baking pans in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the custard is set but still has a slight jiggle in the center.

Cool and Chill: After baking, remove the custard from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack until it reaches room temperature. Once cooled, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until it is thoroughly chilled.

Serve: When you’re ready to serve, cut the custard into squares. For an extra touch of indulgence, top each square with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of crushed pecans or walnuts to add a delightful crunch and enhance the flavor.
