Ingredients

12 oz (340 g) penne pasta

1 lb (450 g) ground beef

3 cups fresh spinach, roughly chopped

1 small onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (15 oz / 425 g) crushed tomatoes

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional for added spice)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp olive oil

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C), allowing it to reach the right temperature while you prepare the rest of the dish.

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, add the penne pasta and cook according to the package instructions until it's al dente. Drain the pasta well and set it aside in a large mixing bowl.

Prepare the Beef Mixture: Heat the olive oil in a spacious skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing for about 3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant. Next, add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks, browning the meat evenly. Once browned, drain any excess fat from the skillet.

Add Seasonings and Spinach: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, chopped spinach, oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and salt and pepper to taste. Continue cooking this mixture for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the spinach is wilted and the tomatoes are heated through, creating a vibrant sauce.

Combine Ingredients: In the large bowl with the cooked pasta, add the beef and spinach mixture along with the ricotta cheese. Mix everything together thoroughly, ensuring that all the ingredients are evenly combined and coated with the flavorful sauce.

Layer in Baking Dish: Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Start by transferring half of the pasta mixture into the dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese and half of the grated Parmesan cheese over this layer. Then, add the remaining pasta mixture on top and finish by topping it off with the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake the Dish: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 20 minutes, then carefully remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when the cheese is golden brown and bubbly.

Let it Rest: Once you remove the baking dish from the oven, let it sit for about 5 minutes before serving. This resting time helps the layers set. If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves for an extra touch of flavor and color.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 55 minutes | Servings: 6 servings

                    - Presentation Tips: Serve hot directly from the baking dish, or portion into individual plates. For an enticing presentation, add a sprig of fresh basil on top of each serving, enhancing the visual appeal and aroma.
